Three hours after driving Abby home and picking Sunnie up from his sister’s place, Brad found himself pulling every Christmas decoration known to God and man from the mountain of shopping bags on his family room floor. He was searching for the one filled with mistletoe.

“I know it’s here,” he muttered.

When he finally found the plastic bag with enough mistletoe to decorate half the town of Royal, he grinned. By the time Abby showed up tonight, he fully intended to have the most important part of his decorating complete.

Checking on the baby to make sure she was still napping, he grabbed the small box of pushpins from the desk in his study and started to work. Twenty minutes later, just as he finished hanging the last sprig of the greenery, the doorbell rang.

“Right on time,” he said, opening the door.

“Time for what?” Abby asked, frowning.

“Come in and I’ll show you.” He took her by the arm and led her into the middle of the foyer. “Look up, darlin’.”

When she glanced up at the chandelier, she shook her head. “Of all the things you could have decorated, you chose to start with hanging mistletoe over putting up the tree?”

Taking her into his arms, he kissed her chin. “It’s the most important decoration of all.”

“Oh, really? By whose definition?” she asked, putting a bit of space between them.

“Mine,” he said, brushing her lips with his. She wasn’t pushing away from him, and as long as he kept her off guard, there was a chance she wouldn’t. “It’s one of the oldest of holiday traditions. For something to be around for a couple of hundred years or more, it has to be significant.”

“When did you decide this?” she asked, sounding a little breathless.

“I think the first time I realized mistletoe’s importance was over a week ago at the TCC clubhouse,” he said, pulling her a little closer. “When I kissed you.”

He watched her nervously moisten her lips. “This isn’t wise, Brad.”

“Why?” he asked, enjoying the feel of her slender form within the circle of his arms. “I like kissing you and you like being kissed. Where’s the harm in that?”

“I…” She caught her lower lip with her teeth as if she were trying to find the right words. “I can’t be what you want me to be.”

Noticing that she hadn’t denied she liked having him kiss her, Brad brought his hand up to brush her dark auburn hair from her soft cheek. “What do you think that is, Abby?”

“I’m not…entirely sure.” She took a deep breath. “But I know what I can’t be. I can’t be one of your casual affairs. That’s just not me. That’s not who I am.”

“I know that, darlin’.” Threading his fingers through her silky waves, he gently pulled her closer. “All I want is for you to be who you’ve always been—Abby Langley, the woman who has challenged me to be the best I can be all of my life and recently became a good friend.”

Before she could speculate further on what she thought he wanted from her, Brad lowered his mouth to hers.
